Maka'āinana Market: A Co-op Food Hub and Grocery Store

Thanks to a generous grant from Maui County’s Department of Agriculture, we are conducting a feasibility study for the much-needed Makaʻāinana Food Hub and Grocery Store Project. This project aims to strengthen Maui’s local food system by working collaboratively with farmers, ranchers, food producers, organizations, and local businesses. The surveys below are a critical part of this process, helping us ensure that the project meets the community’s needs. They will guide us in identifying necessary equipment, determining the services we should provide, and avoiding duplication of efforts. Additionally, the feedback will help us estimate project costs, choose the best location, and begin the grant-writing process. We deeply value your participation in these surveys and look forward to building essential infrastructure that supports and enhances our local food system. Together, we can create a more resilient and sustainable future for Maui.

The Proposed Project will be a multi-functional development focused on local food, housed in one location on Maui and will include the following 3 elements to create connectivity within our local community.

Consumer-facing Grocery Store: With a focus of marketing local products to create more access to local food and learn opportunities for local product and business development.
Food Hub Facility: Designed to serve local producers and the grocery store. Functions under consideration for the hub portion include aggregation, distribution (wholesale and retail), produce, seafood and meat (processing and packaging), produce and egg washing, etc.
Commercial Kitchens: for added-value product development, workshops and education

The Maka'ainana Market aims to build a sustainable food system on Maui by creating a co-op grocery and food hub that prioritizes local agriculture with post harvest full-cycle services under one roof, so we can help fill infrastructural gaps for our local food producers and collect much needed data. This data will help us find out what other products can be grown or made on Maui, to help develop more local businesses. It will also help us see what infrastructure is maxing out the fastest, so that we can inform funders and decision makers of where they can best support our growing food system. Furthermore, it will provide more access to local foods and help lift up so many small businesses and food producers who desperately need more support. We want to know how we can work together to get more local products to our community and also where you already deliver to so we can avoid unnecessary work.
