If you're looking to buy fresh, locally-grown produce in Maui County, there are many options to choose from. Whether you prefer shopping in-person or online, outdoor or indoor markets, large growers, or small farm stands, there is a way for everyone to contribute to our sustainable food system by supporting local producers.
In this installment of the Common Ground Collective's Fresh from the Fields: Guide to Eating Locally in Maui County, we’ve done a roundup of Maui County Farmers’ Markets, offering residents and visitors alike a unique opportunity to taste some of our freshest and most delicious produce.
After consulting with our local food system colleagues and the resources available from various Farmers' Market Coalitions, we’ve defined "Farmers’ Markets" as public, recurring, in-person events, involving multiple vendors, and where the customer can buy from the farmer or maker directly. (If you don't see your favorite place to buy local below, don't miss our upcoming installments covering Mobile Markets, CSA Programs, Farm Stores & Stands and Small Local Grocers)
Due to their in-person nature, farmers’ markets strengthen our local system by building direct and personal connections between farmers, consumers, and communities. What you will find at each market will depend on a combination of what’s in season, the location of the market, and any specific market rules about what can be sold. The best part about buying directly from the grower is that you can ask where and how their products are grown!
Maui's farmers' markets are held in various locations around the island, from small towns to bustling tourist centers. Each market has its own unique character and selection of local goods, making it a worthwhile experience to visit each and every one.
